Weather

Monterey is often cool in the afternoons and evenings, with sometimes windy and/or rainy conditions. The weather can change suddenly, particularly in winter and spring.

Generally speaking, we will hold training sessions unless the weather conditions will prevent a quality educational experience for the players. If a session is cancelled, we will send out notification as early in the day as possible via email and will post an update on the AF Monterey website. If you do not receive an email and there is no updated status on the website – assume that sessions for that day will go ahead as planned.

Player equipment

The Academy will provide soccer balls and field equipment. Each player should wear appropriate soccer clothing – a shirt, shorts, socks, shin guards, and soccer shoes. Players can optionally wear warmer soccer clothing as appropriate (training tops or bottoms, sweatshirt, etc.).

Each player should bring a liquid beverage (water, sports drink) for breaks during the session. For daytime camps and warm-weather activities, players should bring sunblock as appropriate.

Players requiring inhalers or other medicines should bring those and use them as directed by their physician. AF Monterey staff are not allowed to provide or administer any medicines – for example, pain medication – and these must be provided and administered by parents or guardians.

Schedules and pick-ups

Our objective is to start and end sessions on time. Players arriving late should prepare to join the session in progress.

Parents/guardians should be on-site before the end-of-session time to pick up players, as appropriate. We are asking parents of non-driving players to pick them up at the gates by the field rather than the parking lot. There are a variety of community activities at MPC – an open facility – and coaches cannot patrol the parking lot before/during/after sessions.

If a parent cannot arrive at pick-up time – and there is no alternative pick-up – please get in touch with us at 831.222.0325 as soon as possible.

Session cancellations

We intend to deliver every session for every player with the highest possible quality and experience. Due to circumstances out of our control, we may have to cancel a day’s session. When this occurs, we will do our best to inform our families of the cancellation as early as possible using the following methods:

  • Emails to registered players using the provided email address
  • An update to our website (futbolmonterey.org) with the cancellation notification, including the date
  • A voicemail greeting on our Academy phone number (831.222.0325) with the date and notification

In the future, we are looking into additionally providing a text-messaging capability.

If you do not receive a cancellation email and there is no notification on the website, then you should assume that the day’s session is ON.

Here are some examples of reasons why a session might be canceled:

Table Header
Field and weather conditions
Rain, high winds, air quality, heat index
Public safety
Flood or high wind watch/warning, impending weather event, road closures, or other events that require active first responders
Field availability
AF Monterey has a good relationship with MPC – if the field is unavailable due to a campus event, we will notify players/families as early as possible

In the unlikely event of an on-field emergency and we must cancel a session in progress, we will notify parents as quickly as possible using the contact information provided at registration.

Medical issues/emergencies

If an injury or other medical issue on the field requires parental involvement, coaches will first attempt to contact the numbers provided during registration. If we cannot reach the primary or emergency contacts, we will contact appropriate local emergency/medical resources for the next steps.
